Dez's Musings On Our Trip To South Australia
Well we've just got back from our South Australian adventure and what a trip, what a concert, what a great crowd. When we were first offered the gig in Whyalla, my first reaction was, where's that? I soon discovered it was a four hour drive from Adelaide. Four hours, on top of a plane journey from Brisbane to Adelaide!! Well it's not often you get a chance to play in front of 5,000 people so we were keen to go for it, and that turned out to be one of our better decisions.
What surprised us was the trip itself, and what was envisioned as something of a gruelling journey in the heat, turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The scenery was breathtaking, very different to Queensland, and the outback was spectacular and reminded me of California, with red dusty plains surrounded by beautiful mountain ranges.
We met our hosts, who took us to a lovely hotel, and spent the evening kicking back and getting some much needed rest. On arrival at the gig, we were looked after by an extremely professional sound crew, who had us up and running and ready to rock in no time. Staring out at a huge empty field, it seemed a little strange that in no more than a couple of hours time, it would be full to the brim.
Sure enough we got back to witness a huge crowd surrounding the stage who were already being entertained by some very talented local acts. As the evening grew darker, we were all starting to feel a little nervous!
At last we were ready to go on, and blasted through a half hour set of our best songs, combined with some Christmas tracks. We couldn't really see much of the audience in the dark, but we certainly could hear them and got a great response, although the biggest roar of the night was for Santa who shared the stage with us for the finale, a really special moment.
After saying our goodbyes we grabbed some sleep and set off the next day for Adelaide, in order to make the most of the trip. What a beatiful city Adelaide is. The people are friendly and helpful, there is some quite stunning architecture, a beautiful beach, and plenty of trams to get you where you want to go. Furthermore, it was still light at eight o clock in the evening.
I'm not a great flyer so I won't admit to enjoying the flight back to Brisbane, but when we returned, it almost seemed like a dream. Had we really travelled to the other end of the country to headline a festival in front of 5,000 people? You better believe it! Thanks for letting us be part of your fabulous event Whyalla!
Happy Christmas everyone, and hope to see you in the New Year!
Dez :)
